[Event Report] Non-partisan Diet Member Briefing “Intractable and Rare Diseases and AI Diagnostic Support Tools” (July 3, 2026)

Health and Global Policy Institute (HGPI) hosted an installment of Non-partisan Diet Member Briefing, which is held on an irregular basis to brief non-partisan Diet members on key health policy issues. The concept of this installment was “Considering the Future of Health and Medical Policy with Industry, Government, Academia, and Civil Society.” Working more closely with the legislature than ever before and with support from our non-partisan promoters, our objective was to deepen learning for non-partisan Diet members using concrete and verifiable data in themes with a high degree of public interest including cancer, preventive medicine, internal and surgical diseases, pediatrics, and perinatal care and, with a future-oriented vision, have an equal exchange of opinions on next steps.

This installment focused on the potential of AI diagnostic support tools to enable early detection and improve diagnostic accuracy, as well as the challenges associated with their implementation in society. As a case example, cardiac amyloidosis was presented, which is a condition that is said to be difficult to distinguish from other heart diseases or age-related symptoms in its early stages. The session opened with data analyzing the current state of diagnosis and treatment. Building on this, the session raised the possibility that introducing AI diagnostic support tools could enable early detection of findings for cardiac amyloidosis that are easily overlooked, encourage appropriate testing and referral to specialist care even in regions where specialists are limited, and thereby help address diagnostic delays and regional disparities.

Regarding AI diagnostic support, HGPI published a discussion paper titled “The Roles of Industry, Government, Academia, and Civil Society in the Era of AI-Assisted Diagnosis” in May 2026, the contents of which were also shared with the Diet members in attendance on the day.
